My Experience Landing a Job as a Student

The Struggle with Money is Real

When I started out in college, I was lucky enough to have earned a partial scholarship to help with the expenses. Of course, I was thrilled because I thought that it would significantly reduce the costs of attending school. I had always wanted to attend a university, but because of the fact that I came from a very poor, blue-collar family, I honestly never expected I would really be lucky enough to call myself a college student. However, the scholarship opened the door for me to be accepted into one of the most prestigious colleges in Indianapolis. So, I jumped at the chance and enrolled without a second thought.

However, after blowing through the financial aid money, which didn’t take very long. I had a very crucial revolution about what I needed to do in order image-resizedto successfully make it through college. With the rent and other bills piling up, I knew that I absolutely had to find a job….and fast!

My Experience finding a Job:

  1. I tried a few of the most common employment websites, Monster, Zip, and Indeed, but I kept running into annoying issues: Overrun with spam, complicated sign-up processes, discovering incredibly small lists of job opportunities, or being overwhelmed with pop-ups that ultimately led to tons of spam filling my inbox.
  2. Then I tried another job listing site that is set up like Pinterest, and it worked better especially for the small local college town of College Station. It had 388 jobs for me as an accounting student.
  3. The process was very easy, and it’s tailored to students.
    1. Because its for students, they ask what your degree is, then location, and contact info.
    2. From there you can apply, and hopefully hear back.

My Results:

  1. I applied to 10 listings thinking I wouldn’t hear back.
    1. I heard back from 3 of them within a week. Two wanted to interview further and one hadn’t taken their listing down. (wasted about 15 minutes of my time with that listing).

My Conclusion:

This Pinterest-like Job listing site competes better for a student than the giant job listing sites. Especially, because they aren’t filled with the spam like postings from the hiring agencies.
